What is Naprapathy?

Naprapathy is a branch of medicine, (manual medicine) that focuses on the diagnosis / evaluation and treatment of neuro-musculo-skeletal conditions. Specifically, I am a connective tissue specialist that alleviates pain.

What is connective tissue?
Connective tissue is found throughout the human body. A few structural examples include: ligaments, tendons, fascia, cartilage, and discs. Your body is a complex network of connective tissue which can become imbalanced: too tight in some areas (contracted), too loose in other areas (lax). These imbalances often result in pain. You may be totally unaware that you have a comprehensive musculo-skeletal imbalance until a build up of signs and symptoms reaches an unbearable level of pain and loss of function.

These imbalances can occur slowly and over time - causing your body's connective tissue to become 'tight' and distorted (similar to a 'wet dish rag' that has been 'wrung and squeezed' to excess). Some causes are:

  • Trauma
  • Repetitive Motion
  • Improper biomechanics / ergonomics
  • Poor sleeping position
  • Faulty posture

Imbalances can also occur suddenly due to sudden trauma, such as:

  • Motor vehicle accidents
  • Worker's Compensation injuries
  • Falls
  • Sports injuries

Diagnosis / Evaluation of treatment: As a Doctor of Naprapathy, my focus is on the conditions and disorders of the connective tissue and the musculo-skeletal system, which are evaluated in various ways:

  • Detailed medical history
  • Performance of standard orthopedic and neurological examination
  • Anatomical and topographical evaluations
  • Muscle and range of motion testing
  • Diagnostic musculo-skeletal ultrasound
  • Neurological work-up
  • Further diagnostic work-up when necessary includes (radiology, lab, etc.) performed at St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates, IL, St. Joseph's Hospital in Elgin, IL, Delnor Hospital in Geneva, IL, Clinical Diagnostics, Central Scheduling in Lake In The Hills, IL and Spectrum Diagnostics in Elgin, IL.

Diagnostic musculo-skeletal ultrasound that identifies inflammation, tears and ruptures, lesions, neuromas, edema, soft tissue masses, subluxations, cysts, fractures, and foreign bodies i.e, glass and metal fragments, splinters.

Diagnostic neurological work-ups: EMG's invasive needle electramyography, NCS's nerve conduction studies, SSR - Sympathetic Skin Response, DEP's - Dermatomal Evoked Potentails, SSEP's - Somatosensory Evoked Potentials etc.

All of the above diagnostic work-ups both diagnostic musculo-skeletal ultrasound and diagnostic neurological work-ups are performed on site in house at Elgin Naprapathic Healthcare by Board Certified Physicians associated with Professional Neurologics.

Most importantly, Naprapaths are connective tissue specialists who detect tissue imbalances and structural imbalances in the humann body.

NAPRAPATHIC TREATMENT:

At Elgin Naprapathic Healthcare and Pain Management Clinic - we are committed to finding the cause of your pain, providing relief and helping you to make lifestyle changes that will keep you pain free.

As your doctor, my focus is on the connective tissues of the body, including muscles, tendons and ligaments, and how they relate to the skeletal structure. Remember muscles are important to the placement of the bones and postural misalignment can be the source of muscle and joint pain.  Ligaments are stabilizers that act as the guidewires in support and function of the musclo-skeletal system.

Naprapathic treatment begins with an diagnosis/evaluation of a number of factors, including the patient's age and lifestyle, muscle tone, alignment, strength and flexibility. A series of stretches and manipulations of the spine, joint muscles, tendons and ligaments help to align the body correctly, adjunctive treatments and corrective exercises are prescribed for the patient to perform at home to maintain the body's correct alignment.

Botanical medicines and nutritional supplements are used as an adjunct when needed to complement the manual treatment to alleviate and reduce pain, increase structure and function, restore range of motion to the joints and articulations.

Often times dietary influences have an impact on our bodies, thus having an adverse effect on our neuro-musculo-skeletal system. By correcting these nutritional deficiencies and imbalances "via" dietary and nutritional measures, thus gives your body the necessary building blocks to restore function and health.

NAPRAPATHIC TECHNIQUES:

  • Gentle manipulation of the vertebrae to stretch the attached, contracted connective tissue which may be irritating the nerves as they exit the spinal column.
  • Manipulation/mobilization of the muscles and related soft tissue structures help restore balance.
  • Joint mobilization of restricted joints and articulations to restore full range of motion.

ADJUNCTIVE THERAPIES:

Physiological therapeutics and adjunctive therapies may be recommended and administered. These can include:

  • Electro-therapy
  • Ultrasound
  • Galvanic
  • Microcurrent
  • Hot / cold packs
  • Traction
  •  Infrared
  • Therapeutic / rehabilitative corrective exercises
  • Orthopedic appliances and supports

Physiological therapeutics/adjunctive therapies enhance naprapathic manipulation and promote healing at a faster rate. Orthopedic appliances come in the form of belts, supports, lift, orthotics, and pillows, etc. They are used in cases of medical necessity to aid support and restore function for various structural abnormalities.

  NUTRITIONAL COUNSELING:

Examining your diet and ability to assimilate nutrients also plays a role in maximizing your health. As your doctor I will assess your diet and supplement intake to correct nutritional imbalances.
