What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese therapy that has evolved over the last 5,000 years into a complete holistic medical system.
Acupuncture is based on an energetic model that encourages your body’s natural healing abilities. Acupuncture strengthens and improves function, enhances recuperative power and immunity, and enables you to regain and enjoy physical and emotional health. Acupuncture produces results by re-establishing balance and ensuring the continuos flow of vital energy called Chi.
Acupuncture is often used to relieve pain. It is based on the theory that there is energy, called chi or qi, flowing through your body. Chi is thought to flow along energy pathways called meridians. There are 14 main meridian pathways traveling throughout your body, each one is connected to an organ system.
Meridian pathways are like rivers. When the river flows, it transports life-giving waters, nourishing the land and people around it. Like rivers, wherever your meridian pathways flow, they bring life-giving Chi to nourish every cell, organ, and tissue in your body.
If the flow of Chi is blocked or unbalanced at any point on a pathway, theoretically hindering the flow of Chi circulating with in your meridian pathways can lead to pain and illness. Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners believe acupuncture unblocks and balances the flow of Chi to restore health.
Being your acupuncturist what will I do?
During your initial exam at the Elgin Naprapathic Healthcare and Pain Management Clinic a full health history will be taken, with any questions regarding your health, lifestyle, and any other information necessary for diagnosis, along with an appropriate physical exam. This information is then organized in order to diagnose your specific concerns and any underlying factors that may affect your health.
As your acupuncturist I will then place fine, sterile needles at specific acupoints along your meridian pathways. The safe and painless insertion of the needle unblocks the damming or obstruction of your meridians. Releasing this blockage allows the Chi to freely circulate, eliminating pain and restoring the body’s ability to heal.
